The American Petroleum Institute (API) on July 14, 2021 issued the second edition of its groundbreaking API Specification Q2, Quality Management for Service Supply Organizations for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry. There is a six-month window for organizations that are Q2 certified to transition their current quality management system to meet the requirements of the new edition.
The API Spec Q2, 2nd Edition contains several significant changes, including:
- Alignment with API Q1 verbiage where applicable
- Removal of the reference to the outdated version of ISO 9000
- Addition of requirements a) through e) to Human Resources section (4.3.2)
- Addition of supply chain to Purchasing Control (5.6.1)
- Alignment of Control of Testing, Measuring, Monitoring, and Detection Equipment with API Q1 (5.8)
- Addition of Control of TMMDE to list of exclusions
- Removal of Preventive Actions section.

Organizations that are already certified to API Spec Q2 or that are seeking to obtain certification, need to consider the following schedule:
Starting October 14, 2021:
- API will begin auditing according to API Spec Q2, 2nd Edition (Organizations that have implemented the reqs of the new edition have the option of being audited against it).
- New applicants will be audited against API Spec Q2, 2nd
January 14, 2022:
- All organizations shall implement requirements of API Spec Q2, 2nd Edition
- If an organization chooses to not transition prior to this date, findings against the new version of the Spec will be classified as “Concerns” and no actions will be required. No certificate will be issued for API Spec Q2, 2nd
- If an organization chooses to transition prior to this date, findings against the new version of the Spec will be classified as nonconformances and must be addressed according to the current process through myCerts.com.
January 14, 2023
- Organizations may maintain their API Spec Q2, 1st Edition certificates until this date (if they continue to meet all Spec and program requirements).
- On this date, any remaining API Spec Q2, 1st Edition certificates will be withdrawn.
Considering the above schedule, Mireaux Management Solutions is strongly recommending its clients to act as soon as possible taking into account the following steps:
- Document an MOC to ensure upcoming changes to processes and documentation due to the new edition of the API Spec are carried out in a planned and consistent manner.
- Proceed to obtain training on the API Spec Q2, 2nd Edition considering that this was a major revision.
- Ensure that your organization purchases the API Spec Q2, 2nd Edition.
- Work with your Mireaux Consultant in order to draft a plan for transition with clear dates and commitments.
