ISO 45001 – A New Occupational Health & Safety Management System Standard from ISO

iso 45001 update

What is ISO 45001?

It is the new Occupational Health & Safety Management System Standard coming up from ISO. It is based on OHSAS 18001 – the internationally recognized and adopted British Standard for Occupational Health & Safety.

When the new standard will be published?

The new standard is expected to release in October 2016. The first working draft was already created.

What will be benefits of ISO 45001?

Though British Standard OHSAS 18001 was existing and was adopted by many countries, there was a need of an International Standard on occupational health and safety. Alarming global statistics of work related accidents and ever increasing need for organizations to be responsible and ethical about safety of employees is testimony. New standard will have following benefits:

  • It will provide framework to organizations that identifies and controls health and safety risks, reduce potential accidents, aids legal compliance and improves overall occupational health and safety performance.
  • It can be integrated with other management systems such as QMS ISO 9001 and EMS ISO 14001
  • Organizations can set measures for service providers
  • It will benefit society. With internationally recognized occupational health and safety systems in place, the number of incidents and accidents will decrease, with less disruption to operational processes.
